Overview
The Mopar Performance "chrome box" is an update to the factory fitted Chrysler black ignition control unit.
Newer technology internals means that you'll receive more consistent, hotter spark for better performance.
The orange unit is recommended for general high-performance use through to 6000RPM. The chrome unit is rated through to 8000RPM
This ignition control unit is a 4-pin type.
4-Pin, 5-Pin, which do I need? What's the difference?
A 4-pin ignition control unit is a direct replacement for a 5-pin type.
A 5-pin ignition control unit CANNOT replace a 4-pin type, unless your vehicle is already fitted with a "dual" ballast resistor and wiring.
The factory ignition control unit featured a plug with 5-pins, whereas most newer replacements only have 4-pins, here's why.
A 5-pin ignition control module needs two different positive input voltages, whereas the 4-pin unit only needs one positive input voltage and has it's own ballast resistor built-in to take care of the lower voltage requirement.
Vehicles fitted with a 5-pin control module MUST run a "dual" ballast resistor. This is what provides the control module with the two correct voltages.
A 4-pin control module only requires a "single" ballast resistor. This provides the higher current (of the dual ballast) to your ignition control unit, which takes care of providing itself with the lower voltage via a built-in ballast.
